The Gibsons have a long history in North America.
Laird William Gibson arrived in Jamestown Colony in 1625.
Since then, Gibsons has been a part of the history of the
Americas and the founding of the United States.

    1. Hi, Mark,

What documentation do you have of Laird (do you mean, “Lord”) William Gibson in Jamestown in 1625? Would love to see it and thanks, Joan Gibson

  4. Hello,
My earliest forefather – William Gibson 1 – was born in Arbroath September 14, 1742, where he was listed Deacon in 1778, married to Isabella Neish, became a ship – and landowner, weaver and sailmaker
and died December 23, 1815 in Gothenburg, Sweden, where his son William 2 had established industries at Jonsered. William 2 was born in Arbroath march 1783,
married Anna Kathrina Wijk 1815 and died in Gothenburg 1815. Their son Charles Gibson was my grand – grand – grand father.
The Gibson families in Sweden is now very numerous and have the shield showing a swan feeding its kids and the text “EOY A CYGNO” and “PORTAS PANDITES CELESTES”.

I have noticed that there are several Gibsons related to northeastern Scotland. I have tried to find information about earlier forefather of my Gibson family. My father told me
that we are related to Buchanan and have the corresponding warm textiles symbolic colors, Please give me advice how to learn about my Gibson relatives including the
    parents of William 1.

Regards from the island Gotland in Sweden where I live. Olov Gibson

    1. Hello Teddi, thanks for this list of forefathers! Our first Gibson known names are the sail maker in Arbroath, William Gibson 1742 – 1815, according to Angus Archive in Scotland. We have the family crest showing the Swan with raised wings and feeding its 4 children, similar to what the pelican is known for. It it completed with the text “Eov: A Cygne” which probably can be translated to: “Attentive eyes on the swan”,
and below another text “Portas Pandites Celestes”, which maybe means “Open the gates of the sky” See my letter above August 21, 2016. Is it something that you recognize?

I visited Arbroath and the fishing village Auchmithie in October 2000, took photos there, especially at the ancient tomb stones with William and other Gibson names from 18th & 19th centuries at the Arbroath Abbey.
The Signal Tower in the old Arbroath harbor has a museum where I was shown some documents concerning Gibsons in that region, including my ancestors. The Cultural Services of the regional Angus Council was
also helpful and proposed a list of books on the history of Arbroath. Tel: 01674 671415, e-mail: angus.archives@angus.gov.uk

Best regards, Olov Gibson, Gotland, Sweden

hi just found your list regarding the Gibson family. You are right about the name change it starts with:
Auslan (Mac Gilbert) Gib Lord 1176 – 1247
His son was Lord Thomas MacAuslan Chief of the Clan Gibson born 1201 and he died in 1250. He was known as Sir Thomas Goldkeeper he was a Knights Templar and died 1250 as part of the 7th Crusade in Fasiskur Egypt. He was married to Christian Strathern 1202-1230.
They had one son Lord William Gibson 1248-1307 he was married to Lady Beatrix Stewart 1245-1312 and so it goes on.
Our first connection with the usa is with Thomas Gibson 1543-1621 who went to live in Jamestown.
we have lots of information if you would be interested, not sure exactly what you are looking for. hope to hear from you. I live in swindon, wiltshire,uk

      1. Marion
I agree with about 99% of your info but I have laird Thomas Auslan, Chief of clan Gib, because Gib didn’t have son added to Gib until a son between Thomas and William, the father of William. This man participated in battle of Fariskur, but survived when his father and brother died in battle. Before the battle he had added son to Gib around 1248, therefore being the first Gibson.
Interested in knowing if you have info to refute my records.
Although my last name is Gibson, I hit a brick wall on my family in 1773 in Yorkshire England.
I am corresponding on Gibsons on my mothers side that ended in 1750 when she married in Virginia in America.

    3. Hello Teddi.
Very interesting. We have the same ancestors until John Gibson 2ndBartPentland 1601-1694. But who are the parents of John Gibson II 1641-1679 and younger. Do you have a family tree? Did you make a DNA test?
      Best greetings from Strasbourg,
      Thies Paukner
